Growing fear for Lærdals river’s salmon stocks

Growing concerns over the safety of Lærdals gene stock has led to the river owner action group to voice their opinion over the storage of their salmon gene pool.

The action group has claimed that the Eidesfjord facility can no longer be trusted to guard the gene stock due to an increasing number of mishaps. Added to this Northern Norway’s storage unit in Bjerka has reported that the dreaded parasite gyro has found its way into the system. The river owners have asked that a stock of smolt be released into the fjords so as they can complete their life cycle and preserve a genetic stock in the wild.

The entire problem began when Lærdal was infected with the parasite. Now some years down the track the entire management of both the river and the salmon stock is a never ending battle between the parties involved.
The fisheries department has said no to their demands for the fear of the parasite spreading to other rivers in the fjord are far to great to take the chance. This is not the last that we will hear from this once famed river. Lets hope the two main parties can come to an agreement in the near future.
