Better Recreational Angling

More than $450,000 raised by the NSW fishing licence fee will be spent on research and a rock fishing safety project to create better recreational angling.

Minister for Fisheries, Eddie Obeid says money from the Recreational Fishing Saltwater Trust will be spent on projects which will have long term benefits for anglers.
All money raised by the NSW Recreational Fishing licence is placed in trusts and can only be used to create better recreational fishing. Expenditure from the trusts is overseen by angler representatives.
In the latest programs to be approved, anglers going rock fishing will benefit from a $25,000 safety program to further develop the Australian National Sportfishing Association's extensive network of angel rings (safety buoys) at popular fishing spots.
Over the next two years, nearly $200,000 will be spent monitoring catches from recreational only fishing havens which are being created along the State's coastline. $5000 has been allocated to sampling during gamefish tournaments.
Nearly $230,000 will be spent on a two-year trial to test the effectiveness in NSW of buoys designed to attract pelagic species like kingfish, tuna, marlin and dolphin-fish. It's thought these devices will create great new fishing locations and encourage regional tourism.
