More trouble in Tana

Tana is the world’s largest salmon river- we can’t risk any unforeseen accident effecting the wild genetic population. This is the latest statement from the general sectary of WWF- Norway, Rasmus Hansson. He latter went on to say that no one could guaranty that the new mystery parasite that has been found will not spread or infect the wild population. For this reason he is calling for the destruction of all farmed for the suspect region.

On the 8th of May it was reported that a new parasite was discovered in two farms in the Finnmark region. This has already resulted in over 40% death rate in one farm alone and it is feared that the parasite in question could be related to the resent outbreak in Canada. This led to 90% death rate in Canada’s salmon catchments.

In a letter to the Agricultural minister Lars Sponheim, Environment Minister Børge Brende and the Fishing Minister Svein Ludvigsen. WWF-Norway, Norway’s hunting and fishing representatives and the Norwegian river owner group, Norsk lakseelve demand that the infected fish be destroyed today. Currently there is so much uncertainty around the long term risks that they also are planning to fight for the remove all of the companies for East-Finnmark. This is far too important for the Ministers to hide their heads in the sand and wait for the problem to disappear.
