Exacts from chrysanthemum may be the answer to one of the worst pests of both farmed and wild salmon, sea-lice. Doctorate student Karin Boxaspen from Bergen University has been studying the effects of natural exacts on lice infected salmon.
Since 1990 Karin has been studying the effects of several extracts and years of trial and error has proven for example garlic is ineffective but chrysanthemum has proven to remove up to 90% of lice found on many of the farmed fish in Norwegian.
This could be the blessing that our farming industry is looking for. For countless years the farming industry has battled with sea-lice numbers. Not only is the quality of the final product reduced but also the all-important sales price is lower due to the parasite. One of the dark sides of the entire industry is the high death rate of out going wild salmon smolt. If the new extract lives up to the researches expectations. Finally we may have found a balance between industry and conservation.
The new product is been marketed as Pyretrum and is stated to be a “pertroleums-extract” Only time will tell. Maybe we are entering a new age aquaculture. We will keep our eyes and ears open to hear if this is a proven product.
