Verdal (northern Norway) A group of river owners have began a program aimed at capturing the tourist market for salmon fishermen.
The newly formed working party from Verdal has joined forces to increase both productivity and activities on the famed river. Hanna Vinne and John Olav Oldren took control of a section of the river and have been selling cards since 1999. Now they have joined two other river owners to produce a better package for international fishermen.
Part of their new packages includes a sauna by the river so as you can take a break and here how if other fishermen are having any luck. In the not too distant future they plan on building a “lakseloft” (old styled cabin).
They claim that along with Stjørdalselva and Namsen, Verdal lacks a tradition for tourist fishing. Research has shown that this region has a huge future that is under developed. They have agreed that both quality and service must improve if tourists are to be targeted. For example their new offer includes activities if the fishing is slow on any given day. Trout fishing and target shooting just to name a few. Every year over 2000 fishermen visit this region but they have stressed that they have no intention to shut out the locals.
This project has been under taken with such gusto that 16 of the local landowner have just completed a course, which will assist them to tackle the new challenge. Already annually fishermen spend over 16 million kroner in this region. With controls on environmental usage and future investment this could become a benchmark project.
