Ringerike district has long had a problem with acid rain but the latest reports have shown a dramatic reduction in the acid levels over the past year. Water quality with the local lakes is on the mend.

Forrest manager Hans Bergan explained that the levels were so high that he feared it would break the local ecology. This was not only in his parks but also across the entire south coast of Norway. The good news is that pollutants have fallen since the mid- 80’s. In most cases it has fallen as much as 80%.

1890 levels
Hans believes that the reason for this is Norway’s efforts to help the eastern block countries develop better environmental standards. Currently the acid levels with in our rain are at the same level it was in 1920. If it continues to fall at this rate by 2010 water quality will by the same as it was in 1890.

This has lead to an interesting problem. Most people are under the impression that most of southern Norway is suffering from a lack of fish but this far from the true. The largest percentages of lakes are over populated with brown trout and need to be fished to sustain a healthy balance. So the question is was is topping you from trying a little trout fishing over the weekend.
