Orkla River could break a 15 year old record.

Rune Krogdahl the marketing manager for Orkla river and he is proud as punch. Orkla will be the top river in Tronderlag this year. He claims the river is still full of big salmon that are more than willing to give any fisherman a challenge.

This is the best opening for Orkla River since their record-breaking year of 1987. So far this season sports fishermen have landed over 12 ton of salmon. This is on target for the 27 ton of fish caught in 87. Yesterday the gate was opened on the salmon ladder at Bjørset and in the course of one day 600 salmon started their journey to their spawning grounds. One fisherman said he reminded him of the photos and films he has seen where Pacific salmon migrate by the ton along the American coast. Today we have already heard reports that over 1000 salmon have passed trough the ladder. This represents around ten percent of the season’s catch.

Small salmon.

The small salmon run has also started and according to local camping ground owners there has been a large number o f small salmon sighted in the river. This is great news for anglers. Small salmon are always more willing to bite than their larger counterparts. This could not be better timed for the tourist market. The only thing to do is keep your eyes on our reports and we will see if this year is the record breaker they are hoping for.
