120 ton of farmed fish on the loose.

Friday afternoon reports were flooding in of a large number of farmed fish in Alta fjord (Northern Norway). This was confirmed when a local owner reported that he had “lost” over 40,000 salmon from one of his holding pens.

The company Langfjordlaks to date has not explained why so many fish could escape from a so-called holding pen. The farm in question is situated near an important wild salmon river that is one of the many that should be protected by the new “salmon protection act”.

Permission has been given for sports fishermen to use floating nets to catch as many as these fish before they find their way to the rivers but the latest reports we have read is that fewer fish than expected where caught over the weekend. In fact the man that owns the suspect farm set nets three kilometres from the holding pens and caught not a single salmon!

The benefit for tourists and local sports fishermen is that there is 120 ton of fish on the loose and there is an open season for net use in the region until the 2 August.
