Gaula may break the 50-ton barrier

The season is not even three months old in Gaula and already they have reported great catches. Over 17.7 ton of fish have been reported in at the tourist centre. This is despite reports from the North of low water flow and bad reports from other river in the district
Gaula is in great form this year.

In total the official report stands at 3.124 salmon: 910 small salmon (0-3 kilo), 1201 medium salmon (3-7 kilo) and 1013 big salmon (over 7 kilo). Yet it is claimed by Mr Rognes, local agent that this is only a percentage of the total catch for the season. So many fishermen never report their daily catch .He has estimated that the true figure could stand at 35 ton. If this is correct then this years total could match that of last year.

The season start well with record numbers of large salmon caught on the opening days but the lack of rain slowed this down a bit but with a good dose of rain with in the next few weeks it could prove to be the most fruitful season closing in many years. Local divers have had a look at many of the larger pools and have reported that there is plenty of fish in the river despite the low water flow.

At season end all landowners are asked to report their pool results to the Tourist Centre and this year special attention is being paid that all fish caught are recorded. This is something that has improved over the few seasons and we can only hope that it continues in the future.

An interesting note is that Gaula had a total of 51 ton last year so it will be fascinating to see if this year can live up to such numbers
