Fisheries manager Anton Rikstad in Nord-Trøndelag has stated that him will not recent an extension to the season despite the application for a extended season from river owners. The dry season has lead to poor results in North Trønderlag.

Despite the lack of fish caught by fishermen Rikstad has claimed that it has been a fantastic spawning year. He has reported that the information he has seen show that the number of salmon caught in North Trønderlag is half that of the 2001 season. His response to the landowners is that it is nature’s way and they must learn to live with it. He has no legal right to extend the season due to poor fishing. The only reason he could actually extend the season is due to a large number of farmed fish in his rivers.

A few kilometres to the south it is the opposite. Not a single landowner has asked for an extended season. Ingvar Korsen in Sør-Trøndelag is the government fisheries manager and he has not received any requests for extensions.

Torstein Dahlen is the leader of landowners group at Levangerelva (river) has complained that his groups’ application was not accepted. They do not understand why their application was turned down, in the past they have been successful and have accepted the decision with disappointment.

An interesting point is that five of the rivers in this district were among the top ten rivers in the county, Gaula, Namsen, Orkla and Stjørdalselva. The important point to remember is the many fish have been spotted in the fjords and when the rain comes the salmon can run to the spawning grounds without the fear of been hooked!
