John and Sue Brittain

On Monday 7th October Alex Findlater and his group caught the fish of a lifetime. They had booked John Brittains Clifden based charter boat Blue Water for adays Tuna fishing and the weather looked like it was going to do its worst.
Forty minutes out John located Bluefin feeding on the surface, a very impressive sight with fish probably in excess of 1000lbs jumping clear out of the water.
Due to the windy weather a single spreader bar was trolled on one of BlueWaters 80lb class rod and Shimano Tiagra TI 80 W reel. After about 40 minutes the spreader bar was smashed by a Tuna and local angler Martin O'Malley found himself harnassed up in the fighting chair with a tough battle on his hands.
As Blue Water was backed upMartin struggled to regain some of the 500yards of line the fish took on the initial run.
With the fish now about 200yds from the boat the reels drag was adjusted to 45lbs and about 50 mins later the fish was along side Blue Water.
It had a fork length of 9ft and weighed 708lbs
