Giant marine reserve all set
The world's largest fully protected marine reserve is to be proclaimed in the Australian sub-Antarctic.
The 6.5 million-hectare Heard and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve would ensure that one of the globe's last pristine ecosystems remained intact, federal Environment Minister David Kemp said yesterday. But the reserved area is said to have been reduced because of fishing industry protests.

Fish Killed In Acid Spill
The Environment Agency has confirmed a number of fish were killed in an acid spill in south west Wales which led to three people being treated in hospital. The agency says chemicals reached a stream at Nantyci near Traveller's Rest, Carmarthen but is still trying to establish exactly how many fish were affected.

Blind fishermen denied licenses for fishing
The membership applications of two blind nationals were turned down by the Ras Al Khaimah Higher Fishing Committee because they were deemed unfit to carry out the profession. The decision of the committee was issued during a meeting held yesterday at the municipality.

Edmonton man fined $12,000 for transporting, selling tainted B.C. fish
VANCOUVER (CP) -- An Edmonton man who pleaded guilty to illegally transporting and selling tainted B.C. salmon in Alberta has been fined $12,000 in provincial court in Stony Plain, Alta. Barry Deane Wasylyszyn had bought salmon that was not caught under a licence that authorizes sales. He also took the fish to the Edmonton area to sell.

The world’s first complete ocean atlas has been released.
On World Environment Day, the United Nations and leading scientific institutions launched the first Internet atlas of the world's oceans to monitor and hopefully heal the waters that play a critical role in sustaining life on earth. After a decade of planning and more than two-and-a-half years of development, the UN Oceans Atlas is online.

License dodgers reeling!
31 May 2002 More than 500 licence dodgers have been netted in an Environment Agency clamp-down on illegal fishing.The offenders were caught during a two day blitz last weekend (May 25-26). In total 740 waters across England and Wales were hit and 7,971 anglers checked.

FAT FISHERMEN MAY BE BANNED IN NORWAY -
A new law set to be passed in Norway will ban fat fisherman from going to sea. The law is being proposed as research provides evidence that the overweight fishermen are a threat to their own health.

New fish species
At least 12 new species of fish and coral have been found off Madagascar. A survey of the Indian Ocean there even found one coral the colour of blood which has never before been recorded.
