89 year old takes near record fish!

Friday afternoon reports were flooding in of a large number of farmed fish in Alta fjord (Northern Norway). This was confirmed when a local owner reported that he had “lost” over 40,000 salmon from one of his holding pens. skot

An interesting little note from a young fisherman in the North ha landed on my desk. Eight year old Eirik Johansen and his family have spent their summer holiday in Narvik which is just a few hours South of Troms. It was here that he caught a fish that seldom visits this region.

Daughter beats father hands down.
Last Sunday the family Håvardstun from Bergen sailed out for an enjoyable fishing trip in their small boat. Their plan was to compete in a local fishing contest. Armed with heavy jigs and rubber squid imitations they were ready to land the winner. Hilda their 6-year old daughter insisted on joining in the fun. So it was here the story beings.

Tractor fishing for Halibut
With help of a tractor and a few mates Carl Einar Isachsen managed to drag a monster halibut to land. It weighed 248 kilograms. Not a bad day on the beach.

Fish farms defy laws.
The has been yet another farm that has “lost” its’ stock of fish here on the West Coast. Fishermen have been out by the dozen to taken advantage of the free fishing for (farmed) salmon in Bjørnefjorden.

Warning against farmed Atlantic salmon
Seattle(WA),USA: The California-based Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is considered by many to be the leading aquarium in the US, is advising consumers to avoid Atlantic farmed salmon and cod in its 2002 seafood guide released last week. 250,000 consumers have so far received the list.

Fishing organization will stop commercial tourist fishing.
Flakstad. Every year tourist catch over 15000 ton of fish here in Norway. This is about one third of the total catch of the Northern fleet. Now the Norwegian Coastal fishing club is asking the government to help control this problem.
