Protected trout is breeding itself into extinction
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is wrestling with a sexy little question. Should it protect a fish when it may be mating itself out of existence? The westslope cutthroat trout, which was plentiful in Western waters when Lewis and Clark made their expedition, has been interbreeding with rainbow trout that are stocked in its native lakes, rivers and streams. The result is that the fish has harmed its chances for survival, and the Endangered Species Act isn't clear about how to handle this type of situation.

More on farmed salmon.
UK scientists are calling for urgent research to be carried out into the safety of farmed salmon after research showed some fish contain worrying levels of potentially dangerous chemicals. In a small pilot study, Canadian researchers using a comparison with wild Pacific Salmon found farmed fish contained significantly higher levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The concerns were raised in a programme made for BBC TV, Warnings from the Wild, The Price of Salmon. The production of PCBs is banned in most countries - but the chemicals accumulate in oceans after being released in industrial waste. In high levels the chemicals are thought to affect human nervous, immune and reproductive systems.

CANCER-CAUSING CHEMICALS IN FARMED SALMON
Friends of the Earth today (Wed 3 January) called for more Government research and the compulsory labelling of all farmed fish following news of the discovery of increased levels of cancer-causing PCB contamination in farmed salmon. Of greatest concern is the discovery of contamination was up to "ten times higher" in farmed fish than wild caught fish. [1]. In Scotland the salmon farming industry is worth ?260 million - greater than that of the Highland beef and lamb industries put together - and supports 6,500 jobs. Commenting, FoE's Director Kevin Dunion said:

Foreigneirs could buy all fishing quota
Foreign companies would face no legal barrier if they wanted to buy all of New Zealand's fishing quota, a High Court judge has ruled. Justice Ronald Young found that the Government's policy of "New Zealandising" the industry was not enshrined in law. Changes were made to the law in 1999 with the intent of tightening sales of quota to foreigners. A national-interest test had to be applied by the Overseas Investment Commission (OIC) and ministers when approving such sales.

The Frugal fisherman
Last month's monumental decision by the National Marine Fisheries Service to list the silver salmon as threatened under the Endangered Species Act may have you wondering, "what's going to happen to sport fishing on the northcoast?" Well, that's a good question! Now that these fish are protected by this federal ruling it surely will have an impact on local fishing, but it might not be as drastic as it seems. Fishing for other fish will continue.

Clean up rivers and Atlantic salmon will come
Things are bad for wild Atlantic salmon all over, but that doesn't mean people should stop trying to help the fish, which are classified as endangered in Maine in eight rivers. That was the message at a salmon habitat workshop at the University of Maine that drew experts from the West Coast, Canada and Europe. Maine has the last wild Atlantic salmon in the United States. Of the 2,005 known wild Atlantic salmon rivers in the world, nearly 300 have lost their fish completely. Another 403 have populations that are endangered and populations are in critical conditions on another 236 rivers. Salmon have become extinct in 294 rivers

Salmon numbers continue to fall
The World Wide Fund for Nature says stocks of Atlantic salmon have reached their lowest-ever levels. In the last 25 years, WWF says, salmon numbers have fallen from 800,000 to 80,000. It says urgent action is needed to save the species from extinction, and wants science-based catch limits. WWF says it is commercial fisheries in the United Kingdom and Ireland that are catching most of the salmon today. Representatives of member governments of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) are gathering in Canada for the group's next meeting. Its members are Canada, Denmark, the European Union, Iceland, Norway, Russia and the US. NASCO assesses the status of wild salmon populations and develops policies to protect them. WWF "strongly urges NASCO members to follow the advice of scientists and adopt all necessary measures to restore runs of wild Atlantic salmon".

Yet another river system under a black cloud!
G’day as you can see we here at fishbooking have been keep busy since my arrival back from Australia. I have started to fill those stupid empty spaces in our page and I’m proud to say we have added a “ton” of information. In the last few weeks I have written the government rules for salmon and trout fishing, news ways to cook fish, and updated all the latest fishing news here in Norway. Norway's government has an image as the nature friendly power. All things such as our wild rivers and mountain are protected for both there economic and cultureral value. This is not the entire truth!

A mountain adventure on Hardangervidda western Norway
Every year my mates and I take a trip up into the high mountains plateau with the single objective of catching a brown trout over the magic kilo mark. Before we left our home in BERGEN we had agreed on a pact of fly-fishing only. What we didn’t know is our mate that we were to meet on the mountain had a trick up his sleeve. This would prove to be embarrassing for all of us involved in the contest of the year.
